Twisted Travellers (W5) & Child Sex Tourism (Toronto Star)

I received an email from Beyond Borders (check out www.beyondborders.org for more information) with information about an investigation by W5 and the Toronto Star on Canadian sex tourists.  Please take the time to check out the links below to learn more about the issues through the videos and articles and then decide how you can raise your voice for those who are voiceless and vulnerable.

Law & Grace in Terms of Karma

In a 2005 interview with journalist Michka Assayas, U2 frontman Bono spoke eloquently about Law and Grace in terms of Karma:

"At the center of all religions is the idea of Karma. What you put out comes back to you: an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, or in physics, every action is met by an equal and opposite one. It’s clear to me that Karma is at the very heart of the Universe. I’m absolutely sure of it. And yet, along comes this idea called Grace to upend all that 'as you reap, so will you sow' stuff. Grace defies reason and logic. Love interrupts the consequences of your actions, which in my case is very good news indeed, because I’ve done a lot of stupid stuff… I’d be in big trouble if Karma was going to finally be my judge. It doesn’t excuse my mistakes, but I’m holding out for Grace. I’m holding out that Jesus took my sins onto the Cross, because I know who I am, and I hope I don’t have to depend on my own religiosity."

Mr. Flanagan, Child Pornography DOES Harm Another Person

I have been meaning to blog about this for a while but I haven't yet for 2 reasons:  #1 - I've been insanely busy, and #2 - I wanted to take enough time to cool down before blogging my thoughts (though they will probably still sound pretty livid).  Check out the link below for more details about Tom Flanagan's comments regarding child pornography.

"Flanagan told the crowd in Lethbridge he has 'grave doubts about putting people in jail because of their taste in pictures' and 'for doing something in which they do not harm another person.'" (quoted from the linked Winnipeg Free Press article below)

As an educated person living in Canada, I do not understand such ignorant comments.  IS YOUR HEAD UP YOUR ASS?  (Yes, I just said 'ass' - this is serious!).  Do you not know anything about human trafficking?  I don't even have to go into great specifics but can say things like we have an estimated 27 million people (mostly women and children) who are being trafficked on our planet currently - more slaves than at any other point in history.  Many of them are laborers but many are trafficked for sexual purposes including pornography.  Don't say that pornography is victimless - that could not be further from the truth!  It is the DEMAND by men that creates the needed supply of sexual victims and they are moved against their will in order to 'satisfy' the hideous lust and perversion of people that should be put into jail BECAUSE of their taste in pictures -  plain and simple.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion Mr. Flanagan, but you should know that you are entirely wrong when you say that there is no harm done in child pornography.  If you truly believe that maybe you should connect with MP Joy Smith as she knows many trafficking victims that you could speak with personally or perhaps rent "The Whistleblower" this weekend and see what you think about human trafficking then.

Happy International Women's Day

There are many things you can do to support women around the world.  Buying fair trade is a great place to start.  About 60% of Jolica's artisans are women.  And we know that when women and girls are educated, given business opportunities and are able to voice themselves, they share their knowledge with their entire community (men and boys don't, they keep it to themselves).  You can support various women's programs through organizations like Plan Canada and Samaritan's Purse.  Plan Canada has also put together information for Canadians to connect with their MP to say that girl's education should be a priority, no matter where you live.  Check out all the links below and decide how you can get involved today:
