We gave our 5-minute public speaking presentations tonight. We had the choice to address any injustice issue, so I decided to speak about hunger. Did you know that 1 child dies of hunger every 5 seconds? That in developing countries they spend 80% of their income to put food on the table whereas in Canada we spend about 10%. That doesn't seem quite right - 80% from their shortage and 10% from our excess. One in nearly seven people do not get enough food for a healthy life, making hunger and malnutrition the number one risk to health worldwide - greater than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined. My suggestions for a response: getting involved and supporting organizations like the United Nations, Canadian Foodgrains Bank; volunteer at soup kitchens and donate groceries to your local food bank; buying as much locally produced food or planting a garden!
